“Samson, as a Nazarite, is sworn not to cut his hair. Through this promise to God lies the source of his legendary strength. Victim to the temptation of Delilah, and blinded by his tormentors, Samson is brought out only to be mocked. He prays for strength like that of the lion he reputedly killed with his bare hands. Here, pressing against the walls of the painting, he is restored to his former self as his features meld with the image behind him.”
