But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. When Pharaoh does not listen to you, I will lay my hand upon Egypt and bring my people the Israelites, company by company, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.

Artist’s Interpretation:

“The Nile turns to blood, the frogs infest everything, the locusts and gnats swarm the palace…the torment and pain comes in powerful waves of pattern and color sweeping through the composition, overlapping and layered on top of one another. Above it all, posed as the sphinx himself, Pharaoh hardens his heart. The livestock are stricken, the hail flattens the crops, the flies blacken the sky, darkness holds the Egyptians in it’s grasp…then the plague of the firstborn. Amid the wailing masses, Pharaoh finally concedes. Moses points to the blood on the doors of the Hebrews that begs the plague to pass over them. Inside, the unleavened bread lays stacked amid the hastily packed belongings. Moses holds a staff shaped in the form of the hieroglyph for slavery, the symbol of a baker’s tool. The shapes forming Pharaoh’s face are made from the hieroglyphs reading ‘Ramses the 2nd is ignorant.’”
